It’s The Books
There’s an essay in the NYT today by Rachel Donadio, It’s Not You, It’s Your Books, about “literary taste [as] a good shorthand for gauging compatibility.”
As Bookslut blogger Jessa Crispin says, “if I went over to a man’s house and there were those books about life’s lessons learned from dogs, I would probably keep my clothes on.”
Sometimes divergent book tastes prevent even a first date and certainly a second; other times, they just confirm what you already knew about someone you’ve been dating. Sloane Crosley, publicist and author, observes, “If you’re a person who loves Alice Munro and you’re going out with someone whose favorite book is The Da Vinci Code, perhaps the flags of incompatibility were there prior to the big reveal.”
