Books at The First Post
I enjoy reading the capsule book reviews in the Arts&Books section of The First Post, an online magazine from the UK, because the books reviewed — adult fiction and non-fiction — are often ones I haven’t heard much about anywhere else. This week some of the non-fiction titles include The Wild Places by Robert Macfarlane, imaginatively detailing a series of journeys to the wildest places left in the UK, and Singled Out by Virginia Nicholson, a social history of the surplus of single women in England after WWI, while fiction titles include The Rain Before It Falls by Jonathan Coe, which is narrated by a dying elderly woman to her blind and lost great-niece: “she describes 20 photographs that together both tell three generations-worth of Imogen’s jumbled family history and convey the events that led to the girl’s blinding.” About a dozen books are reviewed each week.
